Written by Pamella Long Nurse Aide Clinical...the first day. I show up at the admissions entrance, 25 minute before the designated time, along with three other people from my class. Ours instructor was to meet everyone and then we would walk in together. Well, as you guessed it, we were in the wrong spot. But a kind nurse gave us directions to meet our party. As we were walking down the winding hall, another nurse aide graduate from our school...met us...and said he was "scouting" for us, figuring we got lost. Smiling...we followed like the little ducks in a row to the break room...where our teacher was waiting...giving a "pep" talk. By the looks of it, it was a "serious pep" talk. The cliff notes on the talk, was to be RESPECTFUL, MINDFUL, LEARN and ask for HELP if needed. We all got our assignments, walking like the ducklings we were, and proceeded down the hall to the nurses' station. We paired off with our "CNA buddy" if you will. And away we went. - First, was to make beds. So my "buddy" helped locate the lined room, showed me what needed to be stocked...and then "bed making 101"...in mass production. Man oh man was she fast! Almost as fast as my instructor.
- Second, transferring a resident to the shower chair. Getting her undress. Bath poncho on. And, my buddy helped initially, then I proceeded to finish. Not after getting soaked myself! She screamed, "No more, I want to go back to my bed." She had some lungs on her. I asked, "Am I causing you any discomfort?" She looked up at me and said, "No, just take me back to my bed." Then she gave me this smile. Finishing the shower, I dried her off, put bath poncho back on, and back to the room. While getting her dressed, I smelled something...I didn't know it, but she had pooped right on the floor. Gloves, towels, and wipes...ok...ok...floor good as new. Got resident back in bed...peri-care done. She is feeling fine.
- Third, more beds, and then my buddy took a 15 minute break, but I was to work through until my designated lunch. I need all the practice I can get. So my kind buddy loaned me to another one of her co-workers. Another shower. She was sweet. Undressing her we talked. She had many pictures on the wall. We talked about some of them. Then off to the shower.
- Fourth, stocking linens, then transferring resident to her wheelchair. We went out of area for coffee. While I waited for my buddy to return, I massaged her arms, back, hands very lightly. She said my touch was so soft, and it felt good. I knew my massage therapy license would come in handy. Then when my buddy came back, I had to for my quick half hour lunch before coming back to get residents ready for their lunch.
- Fifth, helping a resident, she could move around pretty well. But I helped her into her wheelchair, and off to lunch we went. Evidently, this resident had quite a scare a few days ago. She hadn't been eating. But I took her to the dining room. And I was instructed to her table. I stayed with for the lunch time, she ate all of her food, which I later found out was wonderful. Talked with the other table mates. It was nice. I enjoyed myself. The resident was taken back to her room; she lay down for a bit. She was so sweet, wanted to give me a banana, then looked feverishly for chocolate to give me. I told her that ate already, but I appreciated the kindness.
- Sixth, transferring resident using lifter. I can see why it may seem frightening to some residents. But found out talking with them in a soothing voice can sometimes ease the situation. Then back to the meeting with my instructor and classmates. Then we went home.
- End note: The rest of the week will be busy. Lots of things to do and learn. New things I haven't even touched the surface yet, but I will. I feel good. This is a nice place to be. In this field. Whether you decided to pursue any other area of healthcare or stay right here, this is an excellent beginning.
- Another end note: With all the breaking the link in the chain of infections (Hand washing) that we do in our profession, it is wise to invest in some really good lotion for our hands.
